Parachute payments

Parachute payments are the Premier League's post-relegation payments to a relegated club, worth 55%, 45% and 20% of an equal share of central broadcast money, with the third year paid only to a club that spent more than one season in the Premier League.

parachute money parachute income

A club relegated from the Premier League keeps receiving a share of central broadcast income on a declining scale: 55% of an equal share in the first season down, 45% in the second and 20% in the third.

The third year is conditional. Only a club that spent more than one season in the Premier League before relegation receives it. A club promoted and relegated straight back gets two years and nothing more.

Parachute money counts as football revenue, so it feeds straight into the SCR denominator. A parachute club's 85% limit can be £90m or more against £30m to £40m for a typical Championship side, which is why parachute clubs dominate the headroom table.

It is temporary by design. When the payments stop, the revenue base falls sharply while the wage bill does not, and headroom collapses with it.
